Women in Prison responds to Supreme Court ruling on the Equality Act 2010 and gender recognition
Responding to the Supreme Court’s April 2025 ruling on whether people with gender recognition certificates are recognised as women under the Equality Act 2010, Sonya Ruparel, CEO of Women in Prison, said:
“At Women in Prison, we work to end the harm caused to women, their families and our communities by the criminal justice system.
We provide safe, non-judgemental and inclusive support for women over 18 who are in contact with the criminal justice system. Our services include support around mental and physical health, substance use, housing, domestic abuse, debt, both in prisons and in the community.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on 16 April 2025, we await guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission on this subject, which will inform the way we continue to run inclusive services into the future.
Our services will continue to welcome and support trans women. We remain committed to offering inclusive, trauma-informed support and will continue to ensure that trans women feel respected, safe and supported when accessing our services.”
